It’s the intuitive mind that drives creativity. Productive writers know this, and use all sorts of quirky games to keep their intuitions fueled and their work flowing authentically. This workshop is based on my own experience of learning how to disregard “writer’s block” and keep the spark ignited. I’ll share advice from a few well-loved geniuses: Albert Einstein’s thoughts on “combinatory play”, Ray Bradbury’s pattern-recognition lists, and Stephen King’s “story game”.
Each week we'll try a different technique with your current or potential project and see what your intuitive spirit uncovers. It’s Genius Playtime!

A PICTURE BOOK WRITING WORKSHOP

GOAL OF COURSE: To develop a well-constructed, expressively authentic story to present in a 32-page book dummy.
To accomplish this goal, students will learn to: understand genre as the form of literature it is; reawaken sense of childhood wonder in order to get to the truth of the concept that is longing to be expressed; explore the feeling best suited for expressing chosen concept.
Students will next learn how to express feeling/concept in genre by reading, listening and experimenting with style. Specific studies: age appeal, voice, pacing, style, repetitive word/phrases, rhythm & rhyme, weeding out words, prose text, thinking process of illustrator, visual irony, back matter for libraries/schools;
queries, submissions, cover letters.
Guest visits include an illustrator, librarians, and editors, all professionals in children’s literature.
